Gillies began her professional career as an actor as a child at the age of 12, when she began attending open castings in the locality. Gillies soon began to appear in commercials of companies such as Virgin Mobile. Gillies debut television appearance was as a character who appeared in three episodes in the show The Black Donnellys. The fall of the identical year, the musical 13 which was the very first Broadway musical that was entirely made up of teenagers, was moved to Broadway. The two most popular songs she sang, "Opportunity", and "It cannot be true" which were subsequently and were followed by smaller parts in numbers such as "Hey Kendra", "Getting Ready", and the title song.
